February focuses on beating hearts, not just because of Valentine's Day, but because it is American Heart Month. All month is dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of heart disease and what can be done to improve heart health. Heart disease is a leading cause of death in both men and women, but there are steps you can take to promote a healthy heart.
Exercise daily. It is recommended to exercise at least 30 minutes a day to help maintain a healthy weight and lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
Mindful eating. Healthy snacks like fresh fruits and vegetables are better options than those high in sodium or saturated fat. Choose wisely.
Stay away from smoking. Smoking presents a high risk for heart disease, so stamping out that cigarette and not smoking is a good idea.
Check your cholesterol. Every five years you should have your doctor test your cholesterol levels to make sure you are at a healthy number.
