Creative Continuing Education for Agents — 2026 Learning Plan

2026 will be another year of technological evolution, rapid market shifts, regulatory changes, and evolving consumer expectations, which makes continuing education even more important for agents and brokers. Staying current with industry changes is no longer a compliance concern, rather it is a strategic differentiator for agents in a competitive market. Prioritizing a consistent, forward-looking learning plan helps agents avoid reactive measures as the year progresses and ensures CE requirements are met.

Follow this strategic plan to align with industry trends and agency priorities in 2026.

Create a Strategic Continuing Education Plan

Include these core areas in any strategic learning plan:

  • Coverage deep dives, which could include examining emerging risks and their coverage forms or endorsements
  • Technical topics, for example refreshers on business interruption coverage or homeowners exclusions
  • Regulatory and compliance updates, including regional regulatory changes
  • Technology and insurtechs, including cybersecurity and agency management platforms
  • Data analytics, like reviewing how metrics can be used to aid decision-making
  • Communication and policyholder service, including empathy and digital policy management
  • E&O avoidance, such as discussing documentation best practices
  • Claims, such as reviewing the claims workflow with carrier partners
  • Sales and marketing, like consultative sales, negotiation strategies, and digital marketing

Follow these steps to build a strategic continuing education plan for 2026:

Review current skills and knowledge. Consider using a skills matrix to evaluate each employee’s strengths and growth opportunities. Leaders can use this to train new staff by pairing them with experienced employees and support training goals for their teams. By aligning training needs to business priorities, management can easily spot skills gaps and plan for evolving needs and growth goals.

Integrate mandatory and strategic coursework together. While states require CE credits that must be planned for, there are many other topics that would benefit agents and agency employees. Mixing strategic and compliance topics can make training sessions more engaging and innovative. Role-specific additions to coursework could include advanced sales training for producers; de-escalation and empathy skills for CSRs; customer experience improvement and workflow optimizations skills for account managers; and advanced analytics and leadership skills for management.

Design courses around quarterly learning themes. Divide learning initiatives into manageable pieces and plan to deliver them seasonally to align with business needs and goals. Training teams could focus on technical skills and compliance updates in the first quarter, then move on to technology and process optimization in Q2, sales and communication updates in the third quarter, and finally finish the year with a robust refresher on E&O avoidance and risk management.

Track metrics and celebrate progress. Continuing education is a critical component of any agent’s career. It should be celebrated rather than dreaded, and leaders can help create an agency culture of continuous learning where achievements are recognized. Celebrate agents who pass challenging courses or earn advanced designations. Help employees understand how continuous improvement through learning helps support the agency’s growth plans and compliance goals.
